Among the many skilled trades practiced by 19th-century settlers was shoemaking. With few places to purchase shoes, local cobblers and bootmakers were in high demand! Many of these tradesmen brought skills and techniques from their European homelands, training their children in the art of shoemaking and repair.

In this exhibit, you will see a variety of shoemaking tools, materials, and histories that are proudly preserved in The Cache Pioneer Museum's collection. Discover how shoes were made and learn about the lives of prominent shoemakers who lived in Cache Valley between 1860 and 1900.

This exhibit was designed to help parents and educators assist children in learning about shoemaking and pioneer history. Sample questions on each page will help facilitate discussions at home or in the classroom. A list of activities is available in the Resources section.

Limited resources and building space prevents the museum from displaying all of the artifacts in its possession for public viewing. Portraits and original photographs are held in permanent storage for conservation purposes. Digitized images of these portraits, as well as individual genealogical histories, have been made available with the help of Utah State University. This digital exhibition is a unique opportunity to access a collection of artifacts and materials in one place.

The Cache Pioneer Museum is dedicated to its mission of honoring the memories of early settlers and 19th-century inhabitants of Logan and its surrounding cities. We hope to inspire future generations of youth to connect to Cache Valley's rich pioneer heritage!

The mission of Cache Pioneer Museum is to collect, preserve, and exhibit artifacts, pictures, and histories of the early settlers of Cache Valley, thereby honoring the legacy and contributions made to the heritage of Cache Valley and Utah.
